If you own a Volkswagen, you may be familiar with acronym DSG, which stands for Direct-Shift Gearbox. It’s fitted to most Volkswagen, SEAT, Skoda and Audi models and will shift gears for you electronically. It’s basically two manual gearboxes in one unit. It’s made up of two clutches, two gear shafts and an electronic control unit (an ECU – another acronym).
Now, the clutches and gear shafts are mounted concentric to each other. Unlike a normal gearbox, which carries the gears with one shaft, the DSG has the even numbers on the first shaft and the uneven numbers (and reverse) on the second. The ECU, the brain of the unit, ensures both shafts work together harmoniously.
The Powershift is Ford’s version of the DSG, fitted to Galaxy, C-MAX, S-MAX, Fiesta and Focus models. We rebuild and update those too!
A DSG is a sophisticated bit of technical innovation. And requires an equal amount of knowledge and ingenuity to rebuild and reprogram. But don’t worry. We at Brittanic can replace the mechatronic unit and have a trained team (we’re an LuK approved DSG clutch installer!) who are able to rectify technical and mechanical problems.
Dual Clutch Transmissions
In short, there are two types of clutch – wet and dry – and the type of unit depends on the engine capacity of your car. If low, dry. If high, wet. If unsure, do give us a call. Come rain or shine, we’re here to help.
